We were 4 active 60+ year olds wanting sun, sightseeing and walking in an area with spectacular scenery without being part of an organised trip. We expected that being out all day we would not have the energy to find new restaurants each evening so booked half board. There were 4 of us staying for 9 nights so we got an extra discount. The restaurant and meals were excellent and way better than we had expected especially at this price, so we felt really lucky in our choice. Staff at the hotel in reception and restaurant were amazingly helpful. We thought the location good as it is close to the trains and buses. The hotel is 5 minutes from the railway to Sorrento [2 minutes], Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum and the same ticket allowed us to take a bus from Sorrento [outside train station locally without extra charge if boarded within 45 minutes]. If you are 65+ there is free entrance to many places like Pompeii and Herculaeum, but otherwise the 3 day 27 Euro Arte card [from Sorrento train station tabac] was good value with any travel and access to 2 sites out of several choices included. The TIC in Sorrento didn't seem to offer brochures unless asked, but Amalfi and Ravello gave us free 1:10,000 & 1:15,000 walking maps/ guides. Excellent hotel to explore this area and public transport recommended. Thanks to the staff.

Written on 11/08/2009 Anonymous from Hertfordshire said...Just back from Sorrento. Hotel was ideally located for all the trips. Hotel food was amazing and abundant. Staff extremely friendly and helpful, very good for families. If you want to walk into Sorrento from hotel, make sure you go from main square in S'Agnello it only takes 20 mins. First time we walked long way round and took nearly an hour. Where possible do the trips on your own. We did the organised Capri trip which was over priced and you were tied to times and meeting points. We felt we spent most of the day meeting up and waiting. We did Pompei on our own it was easy. Just get train from S'Agnello about 7/8 stops. Would recommend trip to Castellammare di Stabia. Also on train line. Then get cable car up to top of mountain. Beautiful views, well worth it. Would not recommend bus trips to Positano or Almalfi. If you can go by boat. The buses for these trips are packed and claustrophobic. poor lady in front of us got sick. The buses wind up and down the roads. You need a strong stomach, and the journey took longer than we thought. We did hear from other people at another hotel they had to pay daily to use sunbeds around the pool. This was not the case at the Hotel Alpha. The pool was a good size if you want to swim lengths, plenty of free sun loungers around the pool which is set amongst trees.Would thoroughly recommend hotel and area, as there is plenty to do. We only had a week and it was not long enough. If you go...ENJOY

After spending a week at the Hotel Alpha I cannot recommend the hotel more highly. The fact that the hotel is in Sant Agnello as opposed to the centre of Sorrento is in its favour, it is quieter and you see the real local town although it still has all the amenities you need. The staff, the food and the cleanliness are all five star! Thank you I will be back!
